Ways To Save On Travel

Fourth of July is coming up soon and it's summer, definitely time for vacation!

As I have always said, traveling need not put a hole in your pockets. You can always save on travel, if you know what to do and where to look. Here are some ways to save on travel:

1. Work while you travel

Look for accommodations that will allow you to work while on vacation in exchange for huge discounts on your stay. For example, at Gunflint Lodge (the classic resort on the Gunflint Trail north of Grand Marais) hosts weekends each spring and fall wherein guests work on Saturday mornings preparing the resort for the coming season (planting flowers, wielding an ax, etc.). In return, the guests only pay $99 for their two-night stay, also including a Saturday-night dinner buffet.

2. Visit Europe's 'second cities'

Europe's second cities (example: Warsaw and Podgorica) are far more less expensive than the more popular cities such as Paris or London.

4. Sleep on a sofa

It always pays to have friends all over the globe. So that when you travel to their cities, just let your friends know and be ready to sleep on your friend's sofa or guest room. Also, there are travel tools such as CouchSurfing -- a nonprofit organization that links travelers with hosts in more than 230 countries. So do check it out, if you haven't found it already.

Print Flyers When You Volunteer

A friend of mine (Bob) is a chemical engineer (undergraduate work at Clemson) and he had some vacation time coming. So he decided to spend his summer volunteering in the Gulf of Mexico to help with clean up from the Gulf oil spill.

You see daily updates about the beaches. A lot of marshland has been affected. But one concern you don't hear much about is whether oil from the spill is seaping into inland water tables and contaminating drinking water. My friend decided to volunteer to be part of a team that will check ground water wells from the Florida Panhandle to the Louisiana-Mississippi state line.

Bob teamed up with a local community agency that is sponsoring his trip. He decided to print flyers that were designed to raise a little money and hel the agency defer some of the costs involved in sending him down there. And as luck would have it, his boss found one of the flyers. The company called him in and asked him if he'd like to spend a month in the Gulf. They told him they'd double his vacation time.

On top of that, a wealthier member of the community called him and offered him the use of a condo in Pensacola during his time down there. So now his wife and kids are going down with him And since he gets weekends off, they'll have a good vacation together even though he's volunteering. Publicity (and good flyer printing services) can often make life sweeter.

Time for a vacation? Check the Cruise Deals
© http2007
If you have never been on a cruise but always wanted to try one, now is a great time to book your first trip. There are some great cruise deals all over the world; wherever you want to go you can be sure to find a cruise within your budget.

For your first excursion, you may want to try a short sail. Some cruises, like the ones from Vancouver, BC, to California, are for three days and two nights. You board at one port and then fly home from the other. This type of short hop will introduce you to the experience without you having to spend a lot of money.

All ships are different so make sure you do a bit of investigation and choose the ship and route that suits your lifestyle. If you want a romantic getaway then it is better not to go on a ship that has the national youth football teams as passengers. Don't delay, book your trip today.

360 Degrees Longitude
$13.94 at Amazon
What if you can leave everything back home and travel around the world? Would you do it?

Exactly what the Higham family did. They left their jobs and brought their kids for a round-the-world trip. After more than a decade of planning and saving, the Highams quit their jobs in 2005 and brought their 2 kids on a year-long travel to 28 countries over 5 continents in a family round-the-world trip that spanned 24 time zones.

Then they turned their travel experiences into a book called 360 Degrees Longitude: One Family's Journey Around The World (published 2009). You can get a copy of the said book from Amazon.

Also, you can check out their 360 Degrees Longitude website and follow it on Facebook as well.
