Work for Travel

Unless you have a rich father who is willing to finance you when the travel bug hits, your only other option is to work hard and save money until you get enough to follow your dreams of traveling.

Can't wait until you have saved enough? Well, you can fast track it a bit. You can hit two birds with one stone if you work while you travel.

Many have chosen this step for their gap year.

If you put careful thought into it, you will definitely find something which would not only allow you to stay in a different country but it could also be fulfilling and fun.

Before anything else, think of what it is you want to do, which skills do you have and where you want to go.

Some have chosen to teach English in countries like Japan, Thailand or Brazil. Others volunteer on a kibbutz or work as au pairs. Those with special skills have volunteered in ranches and zoos. Fun-loving people worked in holiday resorts and cruise ships. Those are just few of the examples that are available to those who are willing to work for travel.

Whichever path you may choose, make sure that you are realistic with your goals and with what you can offer.

If you have good writing skills, this might the time to jump-start your career as a travel writer. You could also build your own website and make money with it as you travel (my favorite). If you have development or humanitarian experience, you could get a short-term job working on disasters or in developing countries. You could get unskilled seasonal jobs in agriculture or hospitality (such as ski resorts). If you’re a linguist you could get web-based translation – no one cares where you’re doing this from. Other jobs you can do online if you have the skills, from anywhere in the world: layout and graphics, web design and research, proofreading and editing, resume writing, or being a virtual assistant.
