Travel by train is not only economical and ecological, it's also a great way to meet interesting people. Now, on Saturday, May 10th, National Train Day will be observed across the United States. According to travel writer Ernest H. Robl, "National Train Day observes the anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, completing the First Transcontinental Railroad – the joining of the Union Pacific, which had built west from Omaha and the Central Pacific (later Southern Pacific), which had built east from Sacramento."

Events will take place at Amtrak Train stations across the country. For more information, visit the National Train Day website.

I think trains can be a fantastic way to really see the landscape of a country as well as the added benefit of being able to stretch and move around that you just don’t get on a bus.

My favourite train travel journey so far has been a 14 hour trip from Chennai. Paying an extra few dollars meant a bunk bed so the trip doubled as a night’s accommodation and some amazing scenery along the way.

Worst train journey? A very, very cheap ticket from Luxor to Cairo. But, all part of the adventure!
