I use hotwire for hotel stays in my own city quite regularly. I know the hotels, locations, and amenities, and I’m pretty close to 100% accuracy about which hotel I’ll get. It’s saved me tons of money.
I’ve used in it a couple of other cities, but only where I’ve known the area and properties fairly well. I think I’d be a bit hesitant with only cursury information.

I mainly use Hotwire whenever I need to go back to the US.
As for cursory information… well, I guess it depends on the traveler. For business, I would have to agree with you 100%. When I travel for pleasure, though, it’s okay to just discover things out for myself when i get there.
