Hilden Lodge, Cheltenham England

As I've mentioned in many earlier posts, the idea of budget travel in the UK is an oxymoron. However, with some savvy planning, it's possible to visit the Cotswolds without taking out a second mortgage on your home. For example, our best find on this trip was the Hilden Lodge, located in Cheltenham. The lodge was acquired in 2006 by Sharon and Gavin Atkinson. They've created `a charming venue, with a convenient, central location.
Breakfast is included with the very reasonable rates, and unlike the food served at other English dining venues, it is actually edible. The Atkinsons even serve vegetarian sausages, which are hard to find at any UK restaurant. Gavin will warn you that they are atrocious, but I respectfully disagree. Rooms are immaculate, and Internet access is available at no extra charge. The Hilden also features something you will never see in the US:An honor bar. Fix yourself a drink, and write it down in the "honor book."
Cheltenham is one of the stops along the Romantic Road
. This must-do drive explores the natural beauty that characterizes the Cotswolds. Avoid the admission fees to the costly attractions. You can just drive along and enjoy the splendid sights!
