Gulf Oil Spill, Bad For Tourism

Some travelers are changing their travel plans and canceling reservations, due to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Last week, the oil spill has reached the shores of Louisiana, making federal and state authorities to begin closing areas to the public. The Breton National Wildlife Refuge has already been closed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Chandeleur Islands – a chain of barrier islands in the extreme east of the state – are among the places barred to the public. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration closed about 5% of Gulf of Mexico waters to fishers.

Recent survey conducted by a data-collection company that tracks activity at thousands of hotels world-wide – Knowland Group – revealed that according to 35% of respondents, the oil spill has turned potential guests to cancel their reservations. Many hotels surveyed are concerned that there will be more cancellations and deferred arrivals in coming weeks.

So how has this oil spill affected your travel plans?
