Travel Health and Fitness
by Lisa Marie Mercer on May 4, 2008

As summer approaches, many people are beginning to plan their vacations. With the rising costs of international airfares, some folks are choosing domestic travel. If you want to keep in shape and save money, consider a hiking vacation. Hiking adds a whole new dimension to fitness. However, don't expect a day on the hills to feel the same as an hour on the treadmill and in the weight room. Hiking involves dynamic balance. In contrast to the gym, which involves muscular isolation, hiking involves multi-muscle use.
If you decide to hike in Colorado or one of the other high altitude states, you will need to take precautions against altitude sickness. Drink lots of water, avoid altitude and try to go easy on your first day on the hills.
