USA Today reported recently that ski season in the US has already become discount season.

Given the economic meltdown of the past year, many skiers are more likely to be lured by cash savings than flashy amenities. The industry is obliging, offering early-season discounts with longer shelf lives.

Not only are the discounts coming earlier than usual, they’re coming with fewer restrictions than usual. The resorts have decided that they would really rather have full rooms than empty rooms.

Last year many of the resorts in the Rockies suffered as tourist from the Eastern US decided to ski closer to home – in places like New Hampshire. The tourism industry is tracking that trend again this year, but so far it’s too early to tell.
