Cruise Essentials: What You Should Know When You Book

Travel writer Beth Harpaz has an informative piece online at the moment on the actual cost of going on a cruise.

The cruise industry bills cruising as a great value. For one upfront price, your accommodations, meals and trip are paid for.

But most cruisers end up spending more. Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of CruiseCritic.com, says her rule of thumb is to assume she'll spend half the amount of the cruise fare on incidentals.

Advertised cruise prices are usually based on the smallest possible cabin for a no frills trip. That can be a miserable experience, even on the best cruise line.

Harpaz takes a look in some depth at what extras you probably want to pay for in a cruise – and what it's likely to cost you. You can read her article here.
