Sometimes, just as you are about to leave on a trip, Murphy's Law intervenes. We find ourselves not willing or not able to leave. This time, the airline is not at fault. What now? When you cancel, would you be allowed to re-book your ticket or get a refund?

It all depends, of course, on the kind of ticket you have, your reasons for cancelling and each airline's policy.

One of the mistakes I made early on with regards to business travel is that I give up after one negative answer when I try to have tickets rebooked or refunded. I used to work for someone who likes to change travel arrangements every ten minutes, so it was difficult. But thankfully, I learned that it is okay to try and call again after one customer service personnel says “No.”
