If you have friends or relatives in a particular city/country where you want to go sightseeing, call them up. In the guise of strengthening your ties, you can ask to spend the holidays with them... that way, you can save on hotel costs.
Everyone a stranger in your chosen travel destination for Christmas? Don't fret. You can always gate crash into big parties and just pretend that you know someone there.
Check out the in-house restaurants in your hotel. Chances are, there will be a Christmas party going on. You know that you are in luck if they have buffet... easiest way to get a free lunch/dinner.
Of course, the above tips should only be done by those with chutzpah and devious minds.

My father always said if your are dressed the part (nicely), have acocktail in your hand and a smile on your face, you cna "crash" just about any party.
