If you're planning a trip to Europe sometime in July or August, check out James Martin's list of festivals, so you can plan your trip around one of these festivals.
One of the most interesting is Spain's La Tomatina Festival which is held on a Wednesday towards the end of August in the town of Bunol in the Valencia region. Thousands from all over the world participate to Throw around 100 metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes on each other. On the eve of the tomato fight, participants compete in a paella cooking contest.
So keep an eye out when you're close by, because you wouldn't want to miss out on the best cultural experience. This is the best way to sample culture and good food in the region that you're visiting.
