2009: The year of the Travel Deal?
Filed in archive News on December 22, 2008
The US dollar is getting stronger, the price of gas is way down, and hotel rates are sinking fast. So Travelocity's senior editor, Genevieve Shaw Brown, predicts that 2009 will be the Year of the Travel Deal. If you can afford a vacation at all, you may be able to get one of the best you've ever had next year...
"Because of the sharp drop off in bookings, we're seeing some pretty deep discounts to just about everywhere," Brown told the Associated Press recently. "It's definitely going to be a buyers' market next year."
The role of the exchange rate will be a key. According to the AP, in April it cost $1.60 to buy a euro. As of mid-December, a euro cost just $1.36, meaning your US dollar goes nearly 20 percent farther now. And if you're spending American dollars, you're buying power is also up at the moment in Canada and Australia.

Hey, do you blame people for being a little more frugal on travel. The economy has really hit even the middle class pretty hard. Travel now a days costs a fortune.

The exchange rates really affact vacation choice nowadays. Can make big difference. Think people don't stop traveling in the economic recession. They just change the way they travel.

Not only should the prices drop, new ideas surface in the new year. For example, to find the cheapest offers on flights Momondo.com provides comparison of over 590 sites around the world and now, as the first in the world it also provides information on train fares in Europe, along with the flights. Plans include trains in the States and Japan. You can go greener with the high-speed trains and enjoy a nice view on the way :o)

I think everyone is counting their pennies. If you have enough pennies you should take advantage of the low prices.
